Date of Arrival
Age on Arrival
By Jerry Maltempi
Like many Italian-Americans, I was born in Brooklyn, NY. My father, Carlo Maltempi was born in the town of Oliveri in the province of Messina, Sicily. He came to this country when he was 9 years old. He traveled with his uncle to America to await the arrival of the rest of his family. My dad was born a dual citizen, being the first born of an American living abroad.
His father Gennaro Maltempi was born in New York and brought back to Sicily as an infant. Gennaro grew up in Oliveri and was a fisherman and lived with his father Carlo, his mother Catherina and five brothers and three sisters. He married my grandmother Carmela Colombo and had four children, My dad, his brother Francesco and two sisters Gianna and Francesca. My Grandma's father was also a fisherman. My father's family met up with him several years after his arrival in NY and they settled in the Coney Island/Sheepshead bay section of Brooklyn NY.
The most interesting thing about my family history is our family name was changed through several generations. My great great Grandfather Gennaro, was born out of wed-lock the son of a local duke or count named DiGrecco and one of his house staff. He was put up for adoption and adopted by a family named Maltempi. In his old age the count who had no other children wanted to make ammends with his son and sought him out. My great great grandfather refused to have anything to do with the count and renounced any claim of kinship with him. He proudly kept the name of his adopted family whom had loved and raised him.
